SWISHY OIL PULLING

 

Yoga and Ayurveda way of living is original and gives great bodily, mental and inner health. Ayurveda and Yoga together are often called as sister sciences, which emerged from the traditional Indian ideology. Ayurveda focuses on Dharma(the right way of living) whereas Yoga mainly focuses on the goal of Moksha(enlightenment). The right way of living as a part of our daily rituals is very essential for our overall health.

Oil pulling or Oil swishing is an ancient Ayurvedic practice in which oil is swished around the mouth for a while and then spat out, similar to mouthwash. Oil pulling is an old popular ayurvedic practice which is also known as Kavala or Gandusha in Charaka Samhita.

WHEN TO DO OIL PULLING?

Oil pulling works great in the early morning or two to three hours after having food to make sure that the person has an empty stomach.

WHY OIL PULLING ON AN EMPTY STOMACH?

The ancient technique oil pulling involves the swishing a tablespoon of oil on your mouth on an empty stomach for around 15-20 minutes. The reason to do it in the empty stomach is it expels toxin from your body to promote your overall health.

HOW TO DO OIL PULLING?

·       The first thing you do in the morning, put 1 tablespoon of sesame oil in your mouth.

·       High quality edible oil like sesame oil, sunflower oil, coconut oil can be used. It is best to use sesame oil.

·       Swish it around gently for 15 – 20 minutes. It is very simple to do.

·       You should swish the oil all around your mouth as much as possible.

·       The oil’s volume increases as it get mixed with other liquids and air in the mouth.

·       Start with 5 minutes and gradually increase your time to 20 minutes .

·       Then you spit the oil out into the trash. It will look foamy and white after a long swish in the mouth.

·       Rinse your mouth with warm water and brush your teeth as usual.

·       This can be done daily or 3- 4 times a week.

·       Swallowing the oil should be avoided as it may contain toxins and bacteria that are harmful to health.

IMPROVES ORAL HEALTH

The most important benefit of oil pulling is to improve oral health. It keeps your teeth and gums strong and healthy. Bad breath occurs mainly due to the bacterial growth and poor oral hygiene. Regularly doing oil pulling is to prevent bad breath.

TEETH WHITENING

When oil pulls away the bacteria, it will gradually remove stains from teeth. Doing it regularly can help in whitening your teeth in a natural way.

DETOXIFICATION

Accumulation of toxins weakens the body and open up diseases. That is why detoxification of body is very essential. Oil pulling remove not only the bacteria but also all toxins present in your mouth. When you spit out the oil you are removing toxins from the body.

CLEAR SINUSES AND GINGIVITIS

The common cause of gingivitis is poor oral hygiene that welcome plaque to form on teeth, that cause inflammation on gum tissue. Regularly following oil pulling helps us to reduce bad breath and gingivitis. It also help to reduce the sinuses.

 

THE BOTTOM LINE

Make sure not to accidentally ingest the oil as it contains toxins. Children below 5 years are not advised to do oil pulling as they may swallow the oil.
